BIOGRAPHY
ALEX STARK is an internationally
recognized consultant, advisor, and teacher on issues of creativity,
efficiency, and design. A graduate of the Yale University School
of Architecture, he is a practitioner of Feng Shui and European
Geomancy. He advises on issues of design and placement for residential,
commercial, institutional, and industrial facilities, urban settlements,
health care facilities, and on issues of institutional and personal
transformation.
Alex was born in La Oroya, an important mining town in the central Peruvian Andes. After attending the American School of Lima, where he graduated with honors in 1967, Alex studied art history at Yale University under a scholarship provided by the Ford Foundation. In 1971 Alex was named Scholar of the House for his original work on 16th century Peruvian architecture. His early thinking on architecture and urban planning was influenced by George Kubler, a foremost scholar of Pre-Columbian and 16th century colonial architecture in Latin America, who was his thesis advisor under the Scholar of the House program. After graduating from Yale College, he attended the Yale School of Architecture, where he studied architecture under Charles Moore.
Upon graduation in 1974, Alex joined the United Nations Development Program for the Eastern Caribbean and was assigned to the island nation of St. Lucia. He was part of a team that created a new Master Plan for port and resort development. He was subsequently hired by the Department for International Development (UK) to assist in the establishment of the development wing of the St. Lucia Town and Country Planning Office.
After his return to the US in 1978, Alex began studying alternative ways of approaching built environments, based in part on his research on ancient architecture while at Yale. Inspired by Chinese and Japanese classical architecture, Alex apprenticed with Grandmaster Thomas Lin-Yun, then head of the Black Hat Tantric Buddhist sect of Feng Shui (BTB). He later studied classical compass feng shui with Roger Green at the Feng Shui Network in the United Kingdom. During this period, he also studied dowsing and Celtic mythology with Richard Creightmore, a renowned English geomancer.
In addition to these studies, Alex has also apprenticed with Don Oscar Miro-Quesada, a curandero shaman in the tradition of the Northern Coast of Peru.
Alex founded Alex Stark Feng Shui in 1995. Projects during this stage focused on health care facilities and healing centers. Important examples of Alex’s feng shui applications include the Bellevue Hospital Intensive Care Unit (New York City) and the Continuum Center for Health & Healing (Beth Israel Medical Center, New York City). In 2011, Beth Israel established a department of Integrative Medicine to provide complementary therapies to all departments of this important institution. Alex's firm contributed to the redesign of the Oncology ward, funded by the Urban Zen Foundation, a non-profit started by Donna Karan to support alternative and complementary approaches to medical care.
In addition to health care, Alex has also contributed to educational and governmental Institutions. Notable examples include the Doerr-Hosier Conference Center at the Aspen Institute, the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in Portland, the University of Minnesota, and the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in New York City.
Commercial clients include Whole Foods Market, Douglas Elliman, Conde Nast Publications, NBC News, Hyatt Corporation, Morgan Stanley, Prudential Douglas Elliman (NY), Tower Investments (CA), Tarragon Development (FL), Willowbend Development (MA), Corcoran Realty (NY), and many others.
Alex has also been involved in the design of spas and hotels, large-scale housing projects such as Port Imperial (Weehawken, NJ), as well as in sustainable land development.
Alex's work has been featured
on NBC, CNN, PBS, the Arts & Entertainment Channel,
The New York Times, Town
& Country, New York Magazine,
Business, Inc., The
Wall Street Journal, Interior
Design, Metropolis, Residential Architecture, Interiors,
Spirituality and Health, ID
Magazine,
Aspen Magazine,
The London Evening Standard, Best
Life Magazine, and many others. He has received a design citation for his feng
shui work by the Boston Society of Architects.
Alex has lectured at
the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, Regents College in London, Yale University, the University of California at Berkeley,
the University of Minnesota Medical School, the University of Minnesota College of Architecture, Naropa University, the American Institute
of Architects, the American
Holistic Medical Association, the Symposium for Health Care Design,
the International Academy for Design & Health, the Center for
Health Care Design, and the International Conscious Design Conference.
Alex has taught feng shui, geomancy
and shamanism at the Feng Shui International Network in London,
the European School of Feng Shui in Amsterdam, and the French School
of Geomancy in Paris. He is in the faculty of the Omega Institute, Hollyhock, the Long Island Feng
Shui Institute (NY), the Golden Gate School of Feng Shui (CA), and
the Feng Shui Alliance (NJ).
In 1980 Alex married Carla Porch, an American writer and photographer. He became a US national in 1987. The Starks live in Berkeley, CA and have one child, Adriana, born in 1989.
